Accountant for small and medium-sized businesses At Steens & Partners we work for small and medium-sized businesses in trade and industry, semi-public and private institutions, associations, foundations and freelance professionals. Accountancy covers the following services, among others: Auditing, evaluating and producing annual accounts Supporting foreign companies that wish to establish a base in the Netherlands Giving commercial advice Supporting new entrepreneurs. Basic principles of the code of conduct Professional conduct We act on the basis of the conduct appropriate to the profession. This means not only that we observe the basic principles of technical quality in the formal sense but that the scope and meaning of these are also evident from our conduct. This applies equally to the private and consultancy functions. We as accountants also need to behave in accordance with our roles as accountants in an exemplary manner. In short, with a professionally critical attitude and perspective. Integrity The usual meaning of integrity is honesty or incorruptibility. Someone has integrity if he complies with specified standards of appropriate conduct. But there is also a meaning of integrity that refers to professional responsibility. It is often not precisely defined in rules or standards what this consists of, but it comes down to a person taking responsibility for what he does. We also find “I take responsibility for what I do” a useful description and we behave accordingly. That conduct is also expected of our employees, both vis a vis clients and colleagues and partners. Objectivity We restrict ourselves to the facts and do not let ourselves be influenced by our own feelings or prejudices or the interests or inappropriate influence of third parties. In other words, we are not subjective. Expertise and care This instruction relates to the skill of providing appropriate professional services on the basis of knowledge and acting in accordance with specialist and other professional regulations. In addition to a certain level of knowledge, this also relates to professional judgement. Delegation, the performance of tasks and file creation are also important. We call this the proper foundation. It is not just a matter of bringing our level of knowledge up to standard and maintaining it by complying with Continuous Training obligations. We keep up to date with relevant specialist literature and with sector developments. Relevant specialist topics are discussed in our monthly firm reviews. Confidentiality All information about orders and clients must be kept secret. This condition is essential to gaining and keeping trust. Everyone in the accountancy firm is obliged to observe this professional requirement and for this reason a confidentiality clause is included in the employment agreement. A few exceptions to the confidentiality conditions are specified in the rules, for example in the event of fraud and litigation. The exceptions will be applied within our accountants’ organisation exclusively by or with the consent of the firm’s management.
