Stellus Capital Management, LLC (“Stellus”) was formed as an independent investment management firm in January 2012 in connection with the spin out of the Direct Capital Unit of the D. E. Shaw group. In 2004, senior Stellus team members helped found a direct investing practice at the D. E. Shaw group under the name Laminar Direct Capital. In 2008, the Stellus team and the D. E. Shaw group raised a strategy-specific middle market, direct investing fund and re-branded the business as the Direct Capital Unit of the D. E. Shaw group. In January 2012, Stellus Capital Management, LLC was formed in connection with the spin out of the Direct Capital Unit of the D. E. Shaw group. During the period from 2004 – 2012, the team provided debt and equity capital to middle market companies (private credit) and equity and equity-linked debt capital to small and middle market energy companies (energy private equity), deploying more than $5 billion of capital. Stellus will continue to provide investment advice in respect of approximately $1.4 billion of private credit and energy private equity investments generated while at the D. E. Shaw group (valued as of December 30, 2011).
