Most people think of accounting as a numbers business. It is really a people business, and as technology for recording and summarizing information advances, the people part of the profession grows. Why? Because even with computer programs to analyze the financial statements, business owners need to talk to someone about the decisions they made, and decisions to be made which impact the profitability, cash flow and growth of their operations. Recently, in discussing gross profit margins with a client, I mentioned that his 41% margin was lower than others in his business. He explained that he sells a lot of high end stuff at reduced margins to make the sale, " I sell an $8,000 unit for a $2,000 profit. Others may be selling a $600 unit for a $300 profit." He is serving a niche market, which, while high end, is still competitive in pricing. He recoups a lot of the difference in service work where the margins are far better Several of our clients operate programs under contracts with State of New Jersey. These contracts are being converted from an annual lump sum amount to "fee for service" for each recipient of the contract servcies. This represents a redical change to the way these organizations manage their operations, we have been able to advise them about the expected impact Our firm was founded in 1976 and serves clients across New Jersey. Vending, solid waste collection, and specialty contractors are among our clients. We serve a number of non-profit organizations, ranging from pre-schools, a methadone clinic, homeowners' associations and clubs, and an agency that operates groups homes for persons with disabilities.
