You might imagine we’d want to talk about money, investments and pensions. Actually, they’re the last thing we’re going to bring up. We believe that before you can hope to develop a sound financial plan you need an equally sound plan for your life. Creating something like that is called ‘Life Planning’. It’s a new and developing field, which is assisting thousands of people better prepare for their future. It can genuinely help give a more secure, contented and fulfilling retirement. The idea is to encourage clients to dig deeper, to examine their values and find out what’s really important to them. For us at Logic Wealth Planning, that means asking our clients some pretty searching questions. And the most challenging, and revealing, of them all is what we call the ‘24 hours Question’. Reflecting on your life, both your accomplishments to date and all the things that you will leave unfinished or undone, ask yourself: What did I miss? Who did I not get to be? What did I not get to do? It usually generates responses that involve themes around the family and relationships – 90% of the responses to this question cover this topic. No surprise there! Many responses involve the wish to have led a more authentic, spiritual or meaningful life. While a large number of others express a desire to have done something creative: to have written a novel, planted a garden or to have learned to play blues guitar, others reflected on how secure they had left their family financially. Further down the list are themes about giving back to the community, about leaving a positive impact and searching for a sense of belonging in a particular place. All very interesting… but you’re probably asking yourself, what does this have to do with money? In fact, it has everything to do with it. It’s only when you understand what you want to do with your life that you can make financial choices that reflect your trust and most deeply-held values.
