The history of our practice dates back to the early ’60s. Robert Mestamaker (Ionia), Daniel Smith (Saranac), and Big John Moore (Greenville) were financial consultants who serviced Ionia and Montcalm counties. Throughout the years, as they retired from servicing clients, their clients came to know Milestone Wealth Management as their place to invest their financial legacies. Its current owner, Paul C. Spoelstra, continues to deliver quality financial and legacy planning for many of the generations of those original families. Paul C. Spoelstra has been serving Kent and Ionia counties since 1994. Please review the Our Team page for biographies on our individual team members. Of particular interest with our practice is the historical schoolhouse where we meet our individual clients. Of course, don’t forget we have our office in Grand Rapids, too! The Hartwell School is a one-room building built in 1872 in Saranac, Michigan. The one-acre parcel was leased for 99 years to the District Board of School, District Number 7, from Gardner and Ester Eddy. Mr. and Mrs. Eddy were paid $50 for the 99-year lease. The building ceased to be a school in the mid-1940s. The history is unclear from then to 1980, when it was remodeled into a dance/party hall by Daniel K. Smith. Soon thereafter Dan moved his financial planning practice in to the building in 1984. It was further remodeled in 1996, to add office space and update its office layout in the main section of the schoolhouse. In 1998, the financial planning practice, along with the schoolhouse, was purchased by Paul C. Spoelstra. One of the first projects that Paul entered into was to request items or “interesting” stories from community members that had contact with the schoolhouse. Through this process Paul learned that the school originally had a bell tower. In the late 1950s, the tower collapsed and, along with its bell, crashed to the ground. Paul also learned the original bell was donated to the Berlin Center Church in memory of Arthur Smith, Dan’s father. Thanks to a former student, Paul received a 1902 class picture. Clearly visible in the picture was the bell tower. And the Bell Tower Rebuilding Project was started. During the early months of 2000, Paul and his father, John Spoelstra, rebuilt the bell tower to its original appearance.
