Our founder, Sidney G. Spero, started the firm in New York City in 1924 with a focus on quality support to a corporate client base. As the firm grew, Gerald Sherman, George Safarino and Roger A. Spero joined to provide specific accounting and taxation support to business clients. During the real estate boom in Virginia Beach during the 1950's and early 1960's, Sherman, Spero and Safarino opened a branch office in Hampton Roads to support one of our New York City based land and building development clients that was expanding into the region. Partner, George Safarino opened the office in 1973. The firm grew a large base of clients in Hampton Roads and in 1983 the main office in New York City was moved to Virginia Beach where it served a client base from New York to Virginia that encompassed real estate, hospitality, linen service and retail. After the passing of Sidney Spero in 1967 the name of the firm was changed to Sherman, Spero & Safarino, Ltd. The firm maintained a steady client base through the years and had added additional partners. With the retirement of George Safarino in 1994 and the passing of Gerald Sherman in 2001, Roger Spero was the only remaining partner of the original Sherman, Spero and Safarino, Ltd. To ensure an efficient and seamless succession, Roger A. Spero transitioned the firm to profit partners Barry W. Cheatham and William K. (Keith) Oliver in 2015. Roger A. Spero remained with the firm on a daily basis as consultant until his death in 2016. With the succession in 2015, Barry W. Cheatham and William K. Oliver renamed the company Sherman, Spero, Safarino & Co., CPAs, P.C The company has maintained the legacy of Sherman, Spero & Safarino, Ltd. and the customer base as well as expanding with a new generation of clients.
