What We Do We are financial planners first, and portfolio managers only in the sense that the portfolios are a funding media for the plan. A portfolio is a tool for the realization of our client goals; it’s never an end in itself. The first thing we do is work to determine what you are trying to accomplish, how much time you have to accomplish it, and what resources you bring to the effort to achieve your goals. We then look at what additional sums you can add to your investments before you need to start drawing an income from them, and what other resources you can rely on. Those calculations will tell you what rates of return you need to achieve, then, and only then, we develop an investment strategy and design a portfolio which, at long-term historical rates of return, will get you where you need to go. Now that might consume five of the 10,000 days we’re going to be working together, assuming we are your advisors for 30 years. Then our real work together begins. Once we have created a quality portfolio of investments that are well-suited to your long-term goals, we become, in a very real sense your behavioral coaches--helping you, over those next 10,000 days (and even longer, let’s hope) to continue to make good decisions, and avoid making inappropriate decisions, about what to do –and what not to do—regarding the portfolio. We don’t say the investments we recommend will “outperform” most of your neighbors’ investments. We certainly don’t rule it out; We just can’t promise it—nor can any other advisor—and it almost has no connection with what we do for our clients. We say that, using the principles that we practice, you should end up with a far better lifetime return than most of your neighbors. In concept, that’s the way we try to help our clients achieve their financial objectives. As you can see, our approach is goal-focused and planning-driven, rather than being based on some attempt to outguess the economy or the markets. Philosophy We’re convinced that all successful investing involves constantly acting toward the realization of goals, and all unsuccessful investing is based on reacting to whatever the markets happen to be doing at the moment. Our philosophy of advice is that by far the most important factor determining the long-term investment returns people get in real life is their own behavior. So, for example, the issue for us isn’t predicting when the markets will peak or bottom out –which no one can consistently do—but managing the way our clients respond to those periods of euphoria near market tops and to the panic and despair which are very human reactions around market bottoms. So we wouldn’t be trying, for instance, to predict when the dot.com bubble would end; we’d be trying to make sure our clients never got overly exposed to dot.com in the first place. Conversely, we wouldn’t be trying to pick a point at which a declining market would bottom; We’d be working to make sure our client did not panic out of a bear market, but instead continued investing at fire-sale prices, thereby getting that much closer to their goals. The way we charge our advice is twofold. There is a fixed cost for the financial plan which becomes the basis for the creation and maintenance of the portfolio. Our only other cost to you is a percentage of the total assets held within the portfolio. We would invite you, in the strongest possible terms, to see that expense as being purely a function of our behavioral advice. As a compliment we add portfolio maintenance services such as, allocating your investments among the different asset classes, choosing the investments themselves, monitoring the portfolio, routine service needs you may have from time to time, full scale annual review with you, your professional advisors, and as many members of your family as you can possibly persuade to attend. In conclusion we feel that coaching you to do the right things, and to avoid doing the wrong things, especially when your peers are giving in to the fads or fears of the moment which could ultimately cost the portfolio multiples of one percent per year is well worth it.
