After earning a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the University of North Carolina in Charlotte, Michael Murphy worked in a variety of public and private accounting firms. But it was inevitable he’d start a company of his own, as he grew up in a family of entrepreneurs. In 2000, he founded Murphy Accounting, a small firm offering bookkeeping services, as well as tax and accounting services, for local Asheville businesses. After two successful years, Michael recognized that he stood at a crossroads — he could maintain the status quo and stagnate, or he could invest in his business and watch it take off. He chose the latter and has never looked back. In 2006, he rebranded as Platinum Payroll. When the Affordable Care Act (ACA) became law in 2010, Michael began hearing all the financial and tax questions families had while enrolling. He knew his company could save money for clients by qualifying them for healthcare subsidies. So he added health insurance to his offerings. The next move was to consolidate the various services under one giant umbrella and let it rain. And that’s when Platinum Group was born. As the firm grew, it embraced a new sense of purpose. Platinum Group now provides a full plate of back-office services for small to medium-sized businesses that prefer not to build an in-house HR department. The team uses every opportunity to educate the community about healthcare options while helping North Carolina families access affordable ACA health care plans. All the company’s products and services fold together neatly into one overriding mission: service.
